Catholic Bishops Urge Nigerian Government for Fair and Transparent Tax Reforms

Catholic bishops in Ibadan, during their first provincial meeting of 2026, have called on the Nigerian government to implement tax reforms with a human touch to mitigate the hardships faced by millions of Nigerians. They expressed concerns over the lack of fairness and transparency in the ongoing tax reform process initiated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The bishops highlighted the need for vulnerable groups to be considered and given latitude to adjust to the new tax regime. They cautioned against imposing economic policies without sensitivity, as it could worsen inequality and social tensions.

Additionally, the bishops urged the government to prioritize security, healthcare, infrastructure development, and economic growth.
