CBN Targets 40 Million Disabled Nigerians for Fintech Solutions

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has recognized approximately 40 million Nigerians living with disabilities as an underserved segment within the financial system, presenting new opportunities for fintech companies. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, represented by Abiodun Olalekan Okunola, Head of the Innovation Management Division at the CBN, made this announcement during Nigeria Fintech Week 2026 in Lagos.
Cardoso emphasized that the financial system has not adequately developed technology and services to meet the specific needs of persons with disabilities. He noted challenges faced by visually impaired customers and the need for financial institutions to train their staff to interact appropriately with customers with disabilities.
Cardoso also pointed out the limitations of fingerprint-based identification for individuals affected by leprosy. He urged fintech organizations to create solutions addressing these challenges, stating that the size of this underserved population represents a significant opportunity for innovation.
The CBN aims to enhance financial inclusion, targeting 95% of the adult population by 2028.
