FCCPC Investigates Cement Price Surge in Nigeria

The cost of a 50kg bag of cement in Nigeria has surged to as high as N15,000, up from N9,300 to N9,700 at the beginning of 2026. This price increase has led the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to initiate a formal investigation into the pricing practices of key cement manufacturers, including Dangote Cement, BUA Cement, and HBM Nigeria.
The FCCPC's Anticompetitive Practices Department conducted a three-month study before issuing investigation notices and production summonses. The commission is examining whether the price hikes are justified by increased operating costs or if they indicate coordinated conduct, market dominance abuse, or anti-competitive arrangements.
Tunji Bello, the FCCPC's executive vice chairman and CEO, emphasized the strategic importance of cement for Nigeria's economy, affecting housing and infrastructure costs. The investigation aims to ensure competitive market functioning and fair consumer value.
Preliminary findings suggest sufficient evidence to proceed with a full investigation, although they do not constitute a final ruling against any company.
