Tinubu's Homeland Security Appointment Defended Amid Criticism

The Centre for Humanitarian Advancement defended President Bola Tinubu's appointment of Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (rtd) as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, emphasizing the need for smarter coordination against emerging security threats in Nigeria. The Centre described criticisms of the appointment as misguided and disconnected from the realities of modern security governance.

Dr. Maurice Ayobami, the Centre's Executive Director, stated that the evolving security landscape necessitates a strategic adaptation rather than a rigid institutional approach. He argued that the appointment reflects foresight in addressing threats such as terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, and transnational organized crime.

Critics, including Prof. Femi Otubanjo from the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, labeled the appointment a failure to address insecurity and suggested it oversimplifies complex national problems. However, the Centre maintained that Famadewa's extensive experience in military operations and intelligence coordination qualifies him uniquely for the role, which aims to enhance inter-agency collaboration and improve homeland security strategies.
