Nigeria's Chess Teams Achieve Mixed Results at Olympiad

In Round Five of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Nigeria's men's chess team achieved a significant 3.5-0.5 victory over Malawi, recovering from a previous defeat to Cuba. Bomo Kigigha drew his match against Joseph Mwale, while teammates Abdulrahman Akintoye Abdulraheem, Odion Aikhoje, and 15-year-old Odey Goodness Ekunke secured wins.

Aikhoje and Ekunke now have 3.5 points each from five games. Conversely, the women's team faced the Czech Republic, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

Deborah Quickpen and Sandra Omoruyi lost their matches, but Michelle Nwankwo and Bridget Michael won theirs, with Nwankwo standing out with 4.5 points from five games. Following these results, both teams have accumulated six match points after five rounds.

In the upcoming Round 6, the men will compete against Vietnam, while the women will face Austria, before a rest day on Tuesday. The Olympiad runs from September 16 to 27.
