Nigeria Expands Sports Presence with Netball Debut

Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, stated that Nigeria's participation in major international competitions in netball, tennis, and chess signifies a strategic effort to broaden the country's sporting horizons. This weekend, Nigerian athletes are competing on three international fronts: debuting in netball at the Africa Netball Cup and the 2027 Netball World Cup African Qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya, opening their Davis Cup campaign in Morocco, and continuing their participation at the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan.

The Africa Netball Cup, running from September 19 to 26, features 10 nations vying for continental honors and qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia. This landmark appearance in netball follows the establishment of the Nigeria Netball Federation and the assembly of a national team just months prior.
