Christian Menefee Defeats Al Green in Texas Runoff

Christian Menefee emerged victorious over veteran Congressman Al Green in the Texas Democratic runoff for the 18th Congressional District. The election, which gained national attention, was influenced by Texas Republican-led redistricting that forced a direct contest between the two Democrats.

In the runoff, Menefee received 46% of the vote, while Green garnered 44%. Neither candidate secured 50% in the March primary, where Menefee had polled at 38%.

Menefee, a younger member of the House Democratic Caucus, replaced the late Sylvester Turner. Throughout the campaign, Green, a long-time congressman and outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, emphasized his opposition to Trump, including calls for impeachment.

Menefee, who previously served as Harris County Attorney, focused on legal actions against the Trump administration as part of his campaign message. The race saw significant outside political spending, with a super PAC linked to cryptocurrency interests reportedly spending $5 million to support Menefee.

The 18th district has a historical significance, having been represented by notable figures such as Barbara Jordan.
