Civil Servants Celebrate Gratuity Reintroduction in Nigeria

On March 5, 2023, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a new exit benefit scheme that reintroduces gratuity payments for federal civil servants, a benefit that had been absent for 22 years. This scheme will provide gratuity equivalent to 100% of the total annual emoluments for civil servants who have served a minimum of 10 years and are contributors to the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Civil servants, including Hajia Safia Umaru and Wale Ogunnaik, expressed their excitement, noting that this reintroduction will alleviate financial burdens upon retirement. Ogunnaik highlighted that the gratuity will complement pension lump sum payments, providing significant financial support.

The expected gratuity payment could reach N6 million, alongside a N5 million pension lump sum. Civil servants urged for prompt implementation to avoid bureaucratic delays in accessing benefits.
