Clerics Set To Tackle GBV In Nigeria

Clerics in Nigeria, in partnership with the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) and United Nations Women, are taking a stand against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). At the annual general assembly and leadership retreat in Owerri, Imo State, a policy to confront GBV by 2025 was validated and adopted.

UN Women's country representative for Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, emphasized the crucial role of faith leaders in reshaping social norms and providing support to survivors.

The OAIC President, Elder Israel Akinadewo, hailed the policy as a positive step towards involving religious leaders in preventing violence. The partnership between OAIC and UN Women, funded by the Ford Foundation, aims to leverage the influence of faith leaders to end violence against women and girls.

This initiative represents a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration to address GBV in Nigeria.
