Climate Change Declared National Security Threat in Nigeria

Rear Adm. Abdullahi Ahm, commandant of the National Defence College (NDC), stated that climate change has evolved into a significant national security threat that necessitates concrete military preparedness.

Speaking at a roundtable in Abuja, he highlighted that the implications of climate change extend beyond environmental and developmental concerns, posing serious risks to national stability and human security. He urged for stronger military readiness and collaboration among multiple stakeholders to tackle climate-induced insecurity in Nigeria.

Ahm noted that global conflicts are increasingly linked to climate-related factors, including resource scarcity and environmental stress. He emphasized the need for the armed forces to deepen their understanding of climate dynamics and develop appropriate response mechanisms to address these threats effectively.

The roundtable, organized by the Centre for Strategic Research Studies in collaboration with sustainable development training centers, aimed to foster dialogue among military personnel, policymakers, and security experts to create sustainable solutions for evolving challenges.
