National Assembly Confirms Only State Police Bill Sent to States

The leadership of the National Assembly has clarified that only the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which seeks to establish State Police Services, has been transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval. This statement was made by Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly, following public perceptions that all Constitution alteration bills had been forwarded to state legislatures.

Ogunlana reiterated that the State Police Bill was transmitted on September 16, 2026, and emphasized that it was incorrect to suggest that all bills were sent. The decision to prioritize the State Police Bill was in response to public demands regarding security concerns in the country.

Other Constitution alteration bills will be sent to the state assemblies only after they have been passed in identical form by both chambers of the National Assembly, in line with the constitutional amendment process. Ogunlana urged the public to rely on official communications for accurate information.
