Nigeria's FG Launches CNG and EV Initiative to Lower Fares

The federal government of Nigeria has initiated a push to reduce transportation fares across various states through the implementation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative is part of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directing that measurable fare reductions should be visible by October 1.
The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), led by Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, reports that fare savings of 31% to 83% have already been observed in seven states and the Federal Capital Territory.
In Borno State, for instance, fares for buses have been subsidized to as low as N50, while in Enugu, CNG buses have reduced fares from N3,000–N4,000 to N1,600. Lagos has also seen significant fare drops, with routes like Ikorodu–Fadeyi decreasing from N1,200 to N680.
Other states, including Abia, Zamfara, Akwa Ibom, and Edo, are implementing similar measures to cut fares by up to 50%.
