Nigeria Secures $2bn for CNG Infrastructure Development

The Nigerian government has announced the securing of more than $2 billion in private-sector investment aimed at developing the country's Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure. This investment is part of efforts to make CNG a more affordable alternative to conventional transport fuels and to lower transportation costs for Nigerians.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, revealed that since the launch of the Presidential Initiative on CNG in 2023, over 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG. The initiative has also led to the establishment of over 400 certified vehicle conversion centers and more than 90 CNG refueling stations nationwide.

The investment has accelerated the expansion of necessary infrastructure and trained over 7,700 automotive technicians. The government has deployed 655 CNG-powered buses and 5,123 CNG tricycles to enhance access to affordable transportation.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the development of an additional 500 CNG refueling stations, aiming for a total of 1,000 stations to increase accessibility and encourage vehicle conversions.
