Nigerian Navy's Key Role in ECOMOG Operations Revealed

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abba, stated that the Nigerian Navy served as the logistics and combat backbone for ECOMOG operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1990 to 2000. The Navy's involvement included providing strategic sealift, combat support, and humanitarian assistance, which saved thousands of civilian lives.

During the ECOMOG intervention in Liberia, the Nigerian Navy enforced a strict maritime embargo and conducted sealift operations to transport troops and military hardware. Similarly, in Sierra Leone, the Navy played a decisive role in restoring democratic governance and enforcing UN and ECOWAS maritime embargoes.

The Navy also participated in the 2017 ECOWAS mission in Gambia, deploying special forces and offshore patrol vessels to support peace restoration. Additionally, the Nigerian Navy's strategic sealift capabilities were utilized in Guinea Bissau in 2022, following a coup attempt.

Their operations have helped Nigeria remain off the international maritime bureau's piracy-prone list since 2022.
