Tribute to Coach Onigbinde by NIS DG Comrade Shaibu

Comrade Shaibu, the Director General of the National Institute for Sports Nigeria, paid tribute to the late Adegboy Onigbinde, who was the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles. In a statement, Shaibu noted that Onigbinde left a significant legacy in Nigerian football, characterized by discipline, courage, and football intelligence.

He expressed a mix of gratitude and sadness, acknowledging the impact Onigbinde had on the sport and the nation. Shaibu recalled a visit on February 9, 2026, when he led a delegation from the National Institute for Sports Nigeria to honor the late coach at his residence in Modakeke, Osun State.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating and preserving the legacy of such sports legends, who are considered national treasures. Shaibu also mentioned that the institute would continue to tap into Onigbinde's experience and wisdom to navigate its core mandate, despite the unfortunate reality of his passing.
