NIS DG Philip Shaibu Mourns Football Legend Onigbinde

Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State and Director General of the National Institute for Sports, expressed mixed feelings regarding the death of Adegboy Onigbinde, the first indigenous coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles. In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, Shaibu reflected on Onigbinde's significant impact on Nigerian football, describing him as a legend who left a lasting legacy.

He recalled a visit to Onigbinde's residence in Modakeke, Osun State, on February 9, 2026, where they discussed the importance of honoring sports legends. Shaibu emphasized that Onigbinde's era was marked by discipline, courage, and football intelligence, and he believed it was crucial to celebrate and preserve the experiences and wisdom of such figures.

He lamented the loss of Onigbinde's wealth of experience and prayed for the eternal rest of his soul while offering condolences to his family.
