Nigerian Army Establishes New Divisions for Security

The Nigerian Army has announced the establishment of four additional divisions and appointed General Officers Commanding (GOCs) to lead these formations, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This initiative aims to strengthen the country’s security architecture and enhance operational effectiveness.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, stated that the new divisions will begin operations upon achieving Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and will progress to Full Operational Capability (FOC) in phases. The reorganization includes a review of divisional responsibilities: 1 Division in Kaduna will oversee Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa; 2 Division in Ibadan will cover Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo; 3 Division in Jos will manage Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe; and the new 5 Division in Makurdi will oversee Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi.

Other divisions will continue their existing responsibilities, with the newly established 83 Division in Benin City set to cover Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states later this year. Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed as GOC of the 9 Division in Ilorin, while Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife will lead the 10 Division in Jalingo.
