Nigeria and Burundi Strengthen Military Cooperation

On Thursday, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening military ties with the Republic of Burundi to enhance regional security. This commitment was expressed during a courtesy visit from Ambassador Edouard Nduwimana at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Gen Shaibu emphasized the importance of expanding strategic defense cooperation through training opportunities, personnel exchanges, and capacity development to improve the operational capabilities of both nations' armed forces. He acknowledged Burundi's progress in peace and stability and highlighted the necessity of ongoing military engagement to address terrorism and cross-border security challenges.

Ambassador Nduwimana conveyed the goodwill of Burundi's President, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to regional peace. He requested increased access for Burundian military personnel to Nigerian military institutions and advocated for joint military exercises and closer collaboration in peace support operations.
