Nigeria and Burundi Strengthen Military Cooperation

On Thursday, 6 August 2026, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army, reaffirmed the Army's commitment to strengthening strategic defence cooperation with the Republic of Burundi. This meeting occurred during a courtesy visit from His Excellency Edouard Nduwimana, the Ambassador of Burundi to Nigeria, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

General Shaibu emphasized the importance of military cooperation through training opportunities, personnel exchanges, and strategic visits to enhance operational capabilities. He acknowledged Burundi's progress in peace and stability and stressed the need for regular military engagements to strengthen bilateral relations.

Ambassador Nduwimana conveyed the goodwill of Burundi's President, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to regional security. He requested increased access for Burundian military personnel to Nigerian military institutions and advocated for joint military exercises and closer collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.
