NCC Begins Study on Telecom Industry Competition Amid Market Dominance Concerns

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a study on industry competition in the Nigerian telecom sector due to worries about the dominance of major players like MTN and Airtel. Statistics reveal that MTN and Airtel collectively control 86% of the market share, with MTN alone holding 51.52% and Airtel 34%.

Smaller operators are struggling to gain market share, prompting calls for regulatory measures to ensure fair competition. The NCC, represented by Chidi Ibisi, aims to create a conducive regulatory framework for both big and small operators to thrive.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is conducting data analysis and advising on the study, led by Mari Iwelumo. Omotayo Moham emphasizes the telecom industry's significant contribution to Nigeria's GDP and the need for a comprehensive study to safeguard against undue market influence.
