Yoruba Leaders Clash Over Alleged Dethronement in Kano

A leadership crisis has erupted within the Yoruba community in Kano State, Nigeria, as two factions engage in a dispute over the alleged dethronement of Oba Alhaji Murtala Alimi Otises. One faction claims that eight traditional rulers have been removed from office, while the Muhammadu Sanusi II faction dismisses these claims as false and misleading.

The Yoruba Community Kano (YCK), led by Taofeek Olalekan Olaosebika, has called for security agencies to enforce the purported dethronement order to prevent a breakdown of law and order. Prominent Yoruba monarchs, including the Ooni and Alaafin of Oyo, are involved in the discussions surrounding this issue.

A letter dated February 23, 2026, addresses the claims of dethronement and emphasizes the need for peace within the community. The Kano Emir Council continues to recognize Alhaji Murtala Alimi Otises as the authentic Oba Yoruba Kano, despite the ongoing rift and calls for reconciliation.
