MTN Nigeria's CEO Faces Backlash Over Data Claims

MTN Nigeria's Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, made remarks regarding the company's data services, asserting that the concept of unlimited data does not exist in the telecommunications industry globally. He emphasized that while consumers may believe they are entitled to uninterrupted service, no mobile network can provide true unlimited data without limitations.

Toriola's comments came amid rising consumer complaints about data depletion and high spending on data services. Activist Omoyele Sowore criticized Toriola's statements as falsehoods, arguing that millions of consumers in other countries enjoy genuine unlimited data plans at lower prices.

Richard Nnorom echoed these sentiments, accusing telecom firms of exploiting consumers. Shina Bilesanmi from the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) attributed the issues to weak regulatory oversight by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which he claimed has failed to protect consumer interests.

Toriola acknowledged the complexity of MTN's billing architecture and the challenges even internal staff face in navigating it.
