Nigeria's Cooking Gas Prices Surge to N1,500 per KG

The price of cooking gas in Nigeria has reached N1,500 per kilogram, prompting significant consumer complaints. In the South South region, prices have risen sharply, with a 20 metric ton shipment costing N21 million, up from N18 million in March.

In Kano, vendors sell a 12.5 kg cylinder for N16,800, while the cost of a 6 kg cylinder has increased to N7,800. Consumers like Mr.

Aduk Joseph and Nasiru Ali express frustration over the high costs, which are exacerbated by low salaries and the need to supplement cooking with charcoal. The rise in gas prices is attributed to several factors, including geopolitical crises affecting oil shipments, a weak naira, and insufficient domestic supply, with Nigeria's overall cooking gas supply dropping from 5.1 metric tons per day in December 2025 to 4.7 metric tons per day by February 2026.

Businessman Mr. Rashe Adelek highlights the impact of these costs on family budgets and the overall economic strain on consumers.
