Inyang Edu Reports Cooking Gas Price Hits ₦1,300/kg

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) in Lagos has risen to approximately ₦1,300 per kilogram, marking an 8.3% increase from ₦1,200 in August 2026. Prices vary among gas plants, with some smaller outlets charging between ₦1,350 and ₦1,400.

Inyang Edu, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, attributed this increase to multiple factors, including global geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving the United States and Iran, which has led to volatility in international energy markets. Edu explained that the rising costs affect Nigeria through international energy prices, shipping and insurance charges, foreign exchange exposure, and domestic transportation.

He noted that the cost of LPG has increased throughout the supply chain, impacting households that rely on cooking gas. Edu also highlighted a year-to-date LPG supply deficit of about 91,966 metric tonnes reported by the Nigeria Mid and Down Petroleum Regulatory Agency, indicating ongoing structural supply challenges.
