Nigeria's Cooking Gas Prices Hit ₦1,900/kg Amid Supply Issues

Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have surged to ₦1,900 per kilogram as supply constraints, infrastructure gaps, and global costs exert pressure on households. Following a period of price volatility, LPG prices in Lagos now range from ₦1,250 to ₦1,400 per kilogram, with higher prices reported in communities along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

A survey indicated that filling a 12.5kg cylinder could cost between ₦15,625 and ₦17,500 depending on the outlet. The Liquefied and Compressed Gases Association (NLCGA) Executive Secretary, Lanre Bayewu, stated that Nigeria's inadequate processing plants and distribution infrastructure contribute to these price increases.

He emphasized that while Nigeria has abundant gas reserves, the lack of essential infrastructure prevents affordable cooking gas. Additionally, foreign exchange rates and international pricing linked to crude oil, which is trading around $100 per barrel, further complicate the domestic market.

Reports indicate a significant LPG supply deficit, exacerbating the situation for consumers.
