Simeone Justifies Lookman Substitution in Copa del Rey Final

In the Copa del Rey final, Atlético Madrid's coach Diego Simeone addressed the substitution of Ademola Lookman, who had been in impressive form since joining the club. Lookman scored in the 18th minute, equalizing after Ander Barrenetxea's opening goal for Real Sociedad.

However, Real Sociedad regained the lead at halftime through a penalty converted by Mikel Oyarzabal after Juan Musso fouled Gonçalo Guedes. Simeone withdrew Lookman shortly after the hour mark, a decision that raised questions as Atlético struggled to create clear chances.

The match went to extra time after Julián Álvarez scored a superb equalizer in the 83rd minute, but neither side could find a winner in 120 minutes. The contest was ultimately decided by penalties, with Real Sociedad triumphing 4-3.

Despite the defeat, Lookman’s contribution of 11 goals since his winter transfer window arrival highlighted his growing importance to the team, making him the first Nigerian to score in a Copa del Rey final since Finidi George in 1997.
