Ilir Meta's Corruption Trial Begins in Albania

The corruption trial against former Albanian President Ilir Meta began, focusing on charges of passive corruption, money laundering, and falsifying asset declarations. The trial commenced on a Monday, with Meta, aged 57, standing in a glass box in court.

He requested that the proceedings be broadcast live to respect the citizens he served. Meta's legal troubles stem from accusations related to his time as Minister of Economy from 2010, with allegations spanning several years.

He was detained and arrested in October 2024 upon returning to the country from Kosovo. The trial is part of a series of high-profile corruption cases targeting prominent politicians in Albania, including former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Rama's former deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, as the country seeks to tackle corruption and improve its prospects for joining the European Union.

The next hearing is scheduled for May 11.
