Ex-President Jonathan Returns to Nigeria After Guinea-Bissau Coup

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has returned safely to Abuja after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau, where he was trapped due to a military coup. Jonathan was in Guinea-Bissau as part of a joint election observer mission deployed by the African Union and ECOWAS to monitor the presidential and legislative elections.

The military authorities in Guinea-Bissau declared a suspension of electoral activities and closed the nation's borders following the coup. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja facilitated the airlift of Jonathan from Guinea-Bissau.
