Nigerian Security Agencies Thwart Alleged Coup Plot Targeting Prominent Political Figures

In late September 2025, a covert intelligence operation involving the Nigerian military, State Security Service (SSS), and other security agencies uncovered an alleged coup plot to overthrow the government. The scheme aimed to detain and harm prominent political figures like Bola Tinubu, Kashim Shettima, Godswil Akpabio, and Abbas simultaneously.

The plan began to unravel when senior sources within the administration provided crucial information. The security agencies, led by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, swiftly launched coordinated arrest operations across the country, neutralizing suspects and masterminds.

Several military and civilian suspects were apprehended, including former Governor Timipre Sylva, identified as an alleged financier of the plot. Despite initial denials by the military, a public acknowledgment of the coup plot was made in January 2026, leading to indictments and arraignments by a military judicial panel.

The investigation involved 16 officials and aimed to maintain discipline within the armed forces.
