Nigerian Security Agencies Uncover Alleged Coup Plot Involving 40 Suspects

Nigerian security agencies have concluded an investigation into an alleged coup plot involving 40 suspects across the military, police, and civilian sectors. The suspects, including senior military and police officers, were reportedly engaged in reconnaissance, funding, and propaganda operations.

Thirteen individuals, including two military personnel, one retired police officer, and ten civilians, have been apprehended by the State Security Service (SSS). The plot, initially targeting the handover of power from former President Muhammadu Buhari to President Tinubu in 2023, was reportedly revived for 2025 due to logistical gaps and insufficient funds.

Former Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva allegedly transferred nearly N1 billion to three bank accounts, with three suspects, including Sylva, remaining at large. The coup plotters purportedly planned to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswil Akpabio, and others.

Security sources revealed that strategic locations, including the Presidential Villa and military installations, were targeted. Some suspects are believed to have fled to South America.
