Court Adjourns Suit Against Jonathan's 2027 Election Bid

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting in the 2027 presidential election. The case, presided over by Justice Peter Odu Lifu, was delayed as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to appear in court for the second time.

The court had previously scheduled a hearing for May 11, 2023, but INEC's absence led to further delays. The Attorney General of the Federation, representing the third defendant, informed the court that the original summons had not been properly served, which prevented a response.

The case has been rescheduled for a definitive hearing on May 18, 2023. The plaintiff, represented by Emmanuel Agida, argues that Jonathan's eligibility to run again should be determined based on constitutional provisions, asserting that allowing him to contest would violate the constitution.

The plaintiff is also seeking costs of 5 million naira against Jonathan for lack of diligence in prosecuting the suit.
