Court Adjourns Suit Against Jonathan's 2027 Candidacy

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned a suit aimed at restraining former President Goodluck Jonathan from participating in the 2027 presidential election. The case, filed by lawyer Johnmari Jideobi, seeks a perpetual injunction to prevent Jonathan's candidacy, citing constitutional provisions that bar him from contesting again.

The court, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, scheduled the next hearing for May 8, directing that notice be served to the defendants, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General of the Federation, who have yet to file a counter affidavit. The plaintiff, Emmanuel Agida, argues that allowing Jonathan to run could lead to a constitutional breach, as it would enable him to potentially win the election and take an oath of office for a third time, violating constitutional limits.

The suit is filed in the public interest to uphold the rule of law.
