Court Denies Bail to Ex-AGF Nwabuoku in Fraud Case

On March 23, 2026, a three-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed the bail application filed by Chukwunyer Anamekw Nwabuoku, the former Accountant General of the Federation, who was convicted of fraud amounting to N868.4 million. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Maitama had previously sentenced Nwabuoku to 72 years in Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre.

Nwabuoku sought bail on health grounds pending the determination of his appeal, claiming his health had deteriorated and required medical attention beyond what the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital could provide. The EFCC, represented by Ekel Iheanacho, countered the bail application, arguing that the offenses were serious and involved massive corruption, which undermines public confidence in the fight against corruption.

The court ultimately ruled that the bail application was unmeritorious and dismissed it accordingly.
