Court Denies Bail to Ex-AGoF Nwabuoku in Fraud Case

Chukwunyer Anamekwu Nwabuoku, the former Accountant General of the Federation, has been denied bail by a three-man panel of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal. The court dismissed his bail application, stating it lacked merit.

Nwabuoku was sentenced to 72 years in prison on March 23, 2026, for laundering N868 million. His appeal sought bail on health grounds, claiming his condition required medical attention beyond what the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre could provide.

His lawyer, Ekel Iheanacho SAN, filed the application on May 8, 2026, but the EFCC countered, arguing that the serious nature of Nwabuoku's offenses and the potential undermining of public confidence in the fight against corruption warranted the denial of bail. The court, presided over by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, ultimately ruled against the bail application, emphasizing the need to maintain public trust in the criminal justice system.
