Court Grants ₦100 Million Bail to PDP Chairman Turaki

On Wednesday, a high court in Maitama, Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Kekemek, granted bail of ₦100 million to Turaki, the factional chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, was arraigned on charges related to allegedly providing false information to the police, specifically under charge mark CR 647/2026, filed by the Inspector General of Police.

The charges stem from an incident dated October 5, 2022, and fall under Section 140 of the Penal Code Law. Turaki pleaded not guilty when the charges were read in court.

His counsel, Abulaziz Ibrahim, SAN, argued for bail, while prosecuting counsel Usman Rabiu opposed the application, citing concerns that Turaki might evade service and fail to attend court proceedings. Justice Kekemek emphasized that bail is a fundamental right and noted that the prosecution did not prove that Turaki posed a flight risk.

The case has been adjourned until June 11 for further hearing.
