Court Orders INEC to Conduct Elections in Kogi Constituencies

On a recent ruling, Justice Isah Danshan of the Federal High Court in Lokoja ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections in constituencies in Kogi State that have been suppressed. The judgment declared it mandatory for INEC to ensure elections are held in these areas, emphasizing the obligation of electoral bodies to guarantee representation as per constitutional provisions.

Ayo Kunle Jonathan, the lead counsel for the petition, expressed satisfaction with the court's decision and urged INEC to comply fully and conduct the elections without delay. The judgment is seen as a vindication for the affected communities, which have long faced injustices regarding electoral representation.

The court's ruling is expected to facilitate elections in 36 constituencies by 2027, addressing the previous 25 legislative positions that were contested in earlier elections.
