Court Ruling in Uzodimma-Okorocha Imo Senate Battle Exposes APC Rifts

A Federal High Court judgment recognizing Rochas Okorocha as the APC's Imo West senatorial candidate has deepened tensions with Governor Hope Uzodimma and triggered warnings about party unity.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared Rochas Okorocha, the former Imo State governor, as the legitimate winner of the All Progressives Congress primary for Imo West Senatorial District, invalidating Governor Hope Uzodimma's candidacy. The ruling has intensified an already fractious political battle between the two former allies and exposed divisions within the ruling party just three years before the 2027 general election.

The judgment triggered immediate backlash from Uzodimma's camp, with his supporters labeling the court decision a miscarriage of justice. Meanwhile, the Okorocha camp celebrated the ruling through online statements.

The dispute has spilled onto social media platforms, with loyalists from both sides engaging in heated exchanges. Uzodimma's team has signaled plans to challenge the court's verdict, though the Imo APC has maintained that the governor remains its preferred candidate for the seat.

Former APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje visited Okorocha following the court ruling, publicly endorsing his colleague's victory. The move has fueled speculation about broader political realignments within the APC leadership, with questions emerging about whether Ganduje's visit represents personal solidarity or signals deeper factional divisions at the national level.

The timing coincides with the emergence of the Rainbow Coalition, a political alliance championed by Nyesom Wike, the minister for the Federal Capital Territory, which has added another layer of complexity to Imo's political landscape. The Renewed Hope Foot Soldiers for Tinubu, a pro-administration group, has warned that the Uzodimma-Okorocha feud could undermine President Bola Tinubu's political standing in the Southeast ahead of 2027.

The group flagged concerns that Okorocha's new status as the APC's recognized senatorial candidate has begun reshaping calculations over who might emerge as the next Senate president. The organization alleged involvement by senior government figures in maneuvering the senatorial contest, cautioning that such moves risk alienating Southeast voters from the APC.
