Court Sentences Al-Qaeda-Linked Terrorists to Life

On Monday, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja sentenced Abubakar Abba, a member of the Ansaru terrorist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, to life imprisonment. The judgment was delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite.

Abba was convicted on multiple counts of terrorism, including financing terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, and illegal mining to fund terrorist activities. His co-defendant, Mahmud Usman, also known as Isah Adam Mahmud, pleaded guilty to 32 counts of terrorism charges.

The court sentenced Usman to 20 years in prison on the remaining counts after the life sentence was imposed on Abba. The judgment specified that the jail terms would commence from the date of the convicts' arrest, which was in July 2025.

The charges against the defendants included coordinating sleeper cells to carry out attacks in the Sahel region and using improvised explosive devices.
