DSS to Appeal Life Sentence for Ansaru Terror Commanders

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to appeal a life sentence imposed on two top commanders of the Ansaru terror organization, Mahmud Usman and Abu Bara, by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court sentenced the men to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to 32 counts of terrorism-related charges.

However, DSS officials believe the life sentence is too lenient for the crimes committed by the Ansaru commanders. The officials expressed concern over the guilty plea, noting that the convicts appeared to have changed their minds shortly after pleading guilty.

The case is particularly sensitive as the Ansaru group was involved in the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, where nearly 60 individuals were held captive. The DSS is determined to ensure that justice is served, especially considering the brutal beheading of two teachers by the terrorists, which pressured the government to release the Ansaru commanders.
