Ansaru Commanders Sentenced to Life for Terrorism

On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two commanders of the terrorist group Ansaru, Abubakar Abba (also known as Abu Bara) and Mahmud Usman (alias Isah Adam Mahmud), to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to 32 terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment, which included a 20-year prison term for counts 30 and 31, with the sentences to run from the date of their arrest by the State Security Service (SSS) on September 11, 2025.

The charges included terrorism, terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, and the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. Initially denying the charges, the defendants later admitted to receiving weapons training in Libya and acknowledged their roles in Ansaru, which operates in the Sahel and Maghreb regions.

Their involvement included a kidnapping incident in Oyo State, where 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers were abducted, demanding ransom and vehicles as part of their operations.
