Anambra Native Doctor Igboekweze Sentenced to Six Years

Igboekweze, a native doctor from Anambra, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment after being found guilty on two counts related to advertising charms for wealth and preparing charms for criminals. The sentences will run concurrently without an option of a fine, considering the time already spent in detention.

He was arrested in February 2025 by Agunechemba security personnel following the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which prohibits such practices. Igboekweze was arraigned on April 4, 2025, alongside two other native doctors on charges including conspiracy and money rituals.

In his defense, he claimed to be a registered herbalist and argued that the videos leading to his arrest were created before the law took effect. Justice Obiorah stated that the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt, while one count was resolved in favor of the defendant.

Before sentencing, Igboekweze pleaded for mercy, citing his family and newborn triplets. His wife and half-brother testified to his good character.
