Ex-Accountant General Nwabuoku Sentenced to 72 Years

Chukwunyer Nwabuoku, the former Accountant General of the Federation, was sentenced to 72 years in prison without the option of a fine by Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court's judgment, delivered on Monday, found Nwabuoku guilty of nine counts of money laundering related to a total of N868 million.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Justice Omotosho noted that Nwabuoku's actions involved diverting funds intended for the security of the Defence Ministry.

The sentence comprises eight years for each count, to run concurrently. The judge commended the EFCC for its detailed prosecution, highlighting that Nwabuoku voluntarily refunded N200 million during the investigation.

Nwabuoku was granted bail of N500 million with two sureties and is scheduled to appear for arraignment on January 15, 2025, for nine amended charges.
