Oshodi Defends EFCC Against Selective Prosecution Claims

Professor John Egbeazien Oshodi, a Nigerian-American forensic psychologist and criminal justice expert, addressed critics of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding allegations of selective prosecution. He stated that credible evidence should drive the agency's actions, asserting, “A crime remains a crime.” Oshodi's comments followed the EFCC's reported recovery and forfeiture of cash and assets exceeding $500 million, as disclosed by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede at the 43rd Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime in the United Kingdom.

He acknowledged concerns about selective enforcement but insisted these should not hinder the EFCC's pursuit of credible allegations. Oshodi praised the EFCC's commitment to due process, citing the case involving former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, where 57 properties were traced, leading to the forfeiture of 48 properties by a Federal High Court.

He emphasized the necessity of judicial oversight and accountability within the EFCC, warning against political pressure and other forms of bias.
