Nigeria's Local Government Elections Face Rigging Issues

Local government elections in Nigeria have faced significant challenges, primarily due to manipulation by state governors, leading to a lack of democratic integrity. Established under the 1999 Constitution, State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) are responsible for conducting these elections, but they have been consistently undermined.

Over the past three months, states like Adamawa, Edo, Anambra, and Bauchi have reported 100% victories for ruling parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC). Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, noted that the lack of financial and operational independence for SIECs allows governors to interfere, depriving citizens of their electoral rights.

This situation has led to chronic underdevelopment in local councils, which struggle to provide essential services. In response to the deteriorating governance, many Nigerians are advocating for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the responsibility of conducting local government elections, citing its relatively better track record in the Federal Capital Territory.
