Lagos APC Defends New Electoral Act Against Criticism

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) issued a statement on Thursday, defending the new Electoral Act against criticism, which they described as politically motivated and disconnected from national interest. The party's spokesperson articulated that the backlash following the President's assent to the Act was an orchestrated outcry from opposition parties.

They maintained that the government acted within constitutional bounds and exercised prudence rather than succumbing to public pressure. The APC rejected concerns raised by opposition groups regarding the law's provisions on the transmission of election results, arguing that it does not guarantee real-time electronic transmission.

They highlighted that experiences in democracy often reveal challenges such as technological failures and cybersecurity risks. The APC cautioned against allowing political convenience to distort policy decisions and emphasized the need for electoral reforms that strengthen democratic institutions without exposing them to constitutional and logistical risks, especially given Nigeria's infrastructural challenges.
