UNICEF and LDSC Launch Malnutrition Initiative in Cross River

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Later-Day Saints Church (LDSC), has initiated a program aimed at reducing malnutrition among children under two years in Cross River State. This initiative was launched following a stakeholders meeting in Calabar, where a work plan was developed for the Latter Days Saints Charity Grant.

Dr. Julie Chiluwe, Chief of Field Office, Enugu, represented by Nutrition Specialist Ngozi Onuora, emphasized the importance of the first 1,000 days of life for brain development and health.

Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, Communication Officer at UNICEF Enugu, pointed out the prevalence of malnutrition in rural areas, driven by poverty and food insecurity. Dr.

Winifred Ogar, Director of Nutrition at the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, noted that the charity grant will cover nine local government areas, including Ogoja, Obudu, Yala, Boki, Yakurr, Obubra, Odukpani, Calabar South, and Biase, selected based on high rates of malnutrition and low vaccination coverage.
