Ogoni Rulers Demand Inclusion in Oil Resumption Talks

On Tuesday, traditional rulers from the Ogoni ethnic nation in Rivers State urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to involve them in discussions about resuming oil exploration in their area. The paramount ruler of Ogale, HRH Godwin Bebe Ukpabi, stated that while they are not against oil drilling, they seek to be fully engaged in the process.

The Ogoni monarchs, represented by 23 signatories, called for the establishment of a dialogue committee to facilitate discussions with the government. They highlighted the significant environmental damage and socio-economic challenges faced by the 118 oil-bearing communities in Ogoniland due to past oil exploitation.

Prof. Samuel Nwiideeduh emphasized the importance of avoiding past mistakes and ensuring that the concerns of the host communities are addressed.

The Ogoni Dialogue Committee, led by former Vice Chancellor Prof. Don Baridam, has submitted a report to President Bola Tinubu, urging engagement with various stakeholders to plan the resumption of oil exploration.
