NERC Orders N20.33bn Meter Refunds to Customers

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to refund N20.33 billion to customers for outstanding meter reimbursements. This directive, outlined in Order No.

NERC 2026/025, amends a previous order from 2023 and mandates full compliance by DisCos. The refunds are to be fully disbursed within 12 months, starting March 1, 2026.

NERC Chairman Musiliu Oseni and Commissioner Dafe Akpeney emphasized the need for timely reimbursements, noting that as of December 31, 2025, DisCos had failed to reimburse customers under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework. The commission will monitor compliance and expects DisCos to accelerate the repayment process.

Refunds will be credited automatically to customer accounts, with prepaid customers receiving two monthly tokens and postpaid customers seeing distinct credit line items on their bills. The order aims to enhance sector credibility and customer confidence.
