Nigeria Customs Service Enhances Revenue with AI Deployment

The Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance revenue generation and minimize audit queries. This initiative was discussed during a three-day training session aimed at fostering a proactive partnership with lawmakers and fiscal authorities.

The AI deployment is expected to improve the management of complex trade systems, enabling better anomaly detection and leak identification. Adeniyi emphasized that revenue generation involves various stakeholders, including commercial banks and government agencies, to ensure compliance and block leakages.

The initiative also aims to reconcile revenue mobilization across the fiscal chain, with the National Assembly playing a crucial role in oversight. Bamidel Salam, Chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, noted the importance of strengthening governance and compliance rather than merely identifying errors.

The Customs Service has made significant strides in reducing infractions in recent years, reflecting a commitment to reform and innovation.
