Nigeria Customs Service Implements AI for Revenue Transparency

The Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, is implementing an ambitious plan to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance revenue generation and transparency. This initiative aims to reduce audit queries and improve compliance with fiscal regulations.

Adeniyi emphasized the importance of a proactive partnership with lawmakers and oversight institutions to reshape the long-standing relationship between the Customs Service and the National Assembly. The deployment of AI is expected to significantly improve operational management, enabling the detection of anomalies in trade volumes and leakage.

The technology will assist in analyzing patterns in international trade, thereby enhancing the efficiency of revenue generation processes. The initiative also involves multiple stakeholders, including commercial banks and auditors, to ensure compliance and address revenue mobilization challenges.

Bamidel Salam, Chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, noted the importance of strengthening governance through compliance rather than punitive oversight. The Customs Service aims to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in its operations.
